Getting Ready For Christmas

What is Christmas without gingerbread houses and the Howards?!

Are we making the gingerbread house or eating it? BOTH!

The tree went up the day after Thanksgiving and we couldn't have been more excited!
Playing with our family mascot - Mr. Moose
Why are you putting such pretty balls on a tree? I can think of much better uses for them so off they go.
 "Cheese!"

State Fair

Yes, you can fit 3 kids on a double stroller.
 Pig Races

We went to the State Fair a while ago and it was tons of fun. The girls LOVED the rides and petting all of the animals.

Story Time at the Library

Having way fun at the library for story (and singing time).

Staples

On Saturday, Nov 17, I was trying once again to prepare for the talk I was assigned to give the following day. As had happened every day that week, I woke up (extra) early to study and prepare and my girls woke up then too. When Keith returned from his morning run I realized my time to prepare my talk was over and I had accomplished nothing of significance. Being the mature, logical person that I am I instantly started to cry. Keith, being the wonderful husband he is, whisked the kids away, got everyone ready and fed and then left the house to give me some quiet time.

First Keith took the girls to play ‘softball’ with some old church friends in Maricopa. Then he took everyone to the park. At the park Savannah decided to show her Daddy a new trick she had learned. She learned that she could hold on to the vertical barrier bars and step off of any ledge. Her hands would ‘slowly’ move down the vertical bars leaving her feet just a foot or so above the ground where she could then jump/fall off in relative safety.

However, some things didn’t go as she expected. First of all, we’d been to a park where the ledge she enjoyed jumping off of was 2-3 feet high, this one was closer to 4. Also, for whatever reason, her head must have been tilted a little bit back as it hit the ‘diving board’ on the way down.

I was back home enjoying my peace and quiet and had just finished my talk when I got a phone call from Keith asking where the closest Urgent Care was that took our new insurance.

Keith spent the next two hours waiting at the Maricopa Urgent Care and three staples later was sent home with instructions to keep it clean and have the staples removed at any medical facility in 5-7 days.

Two days later, on Monday, we went to the park and had a wonderful time. I watched her like a hawk and she didn’t even attempt her new trick.

When we got home there was enough peace I was able to pick up my book for a few minutes of relaxation. Savannah climbed on the couch with me but was quickly bored and in her attempt to get off she rolled off the footrest and landed on her back. The sound of her head hitting the tile was muffled only by a piece of paper. Miraculously she cried for a few minutes but was totally fine.

Shortly after I was preparing lunch when Rachel climbed into Savannah’s chair and started eating something. I moved her over as I wanted Savannah strapped firmly into whatever elevated platform she had to be on, even if it was just a chair. As I was moving Rachel Savannah started climbing into a different chair and mid-climb leaned over to steal some of whatever Eliza was eating (leftover cereal from breakfast?). Of course, as I was moving Rachel to a different place, I had just set Rachel in between me and Savannah and although I highly suspected that Savannah’s rather typical behavior would end awry today I was powerless to do anything about it before Savannah crashed to the floor.

Sure enough, after her cries calmed down enough for me to move I noticed we were both covered in blood. When I cleaned everything up I realized the staples were all still in place so I decided we didn’t need to go into the doctor.

I had great intentions of calling the doctor at the beginning of the week, but it just slipped by me. The Friday after Thanksgiving I called our pediatrician and unsurprisingly they were closed for the weekend. I didn’t think much of it and waiting until Monday. Their next available appointment was Wednesday and although they sounded like that was a long time away no one offered any alternatives nor was it even suggested that something else should be done.

On Wednesday, November 28, I went to our appointment and the doctor immediately seemed concerned it had been so long, but said we’d probably be fine. She was easily able to take out two of the staples, but the third one caused more difficulty. They even brought in a nurse to help me hold Savannah down as she was very unhappy.

She kept getting two of the three pronged tool in a usable position which twisted the staple instead of bending it into the shape needed for removal. She thought she had just cut through the staple and she tried to remove each half with tweezers. They were not pulling out.

She said she was traumatizing Savannah too much and felt it would be better to have a surgeon with some local anesthetic take it out and she set us up with a doctor at Banner Estrella ER.

We then had another appointment with a different doctor to see Eliza so it was about a half hour – 45 minutes later that we pulled out of the pediatrician’s office and drove the 10 minutes to the ER. At this time Banner Estrella is constructing some parking garages and has closed most of their parking lots. This meant I drove around for about 10 minutes looking for a spot until I found someone leaving and waited for them to back out. My parking spot – which was I was very grateful to have – was about a 3-5 minute walk to the ER entrance.

Honestly, the ER waiting game was much shorter than I could have imagined and they even gave us some gramcrackers for my now very hungry children. It took the ER nurse about 5 minutes to realize the doctor had turned the staple around so instead of the staple being cut, we were looking at the bottom of the staple. This also explains why Savannah was so upset when the doctor had tried to pull out each half of the staple. The ER nurse turned it around (yes, that was very painful for poor Savannah who, although very upset, did do a remarkable job) and was quickly able to get it out.

We then spent 15-20 minutes singing “The Wheels on the Bus”, “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes”, a bathroom trip, and making faces at all of the doctors walking by trying to make them laugh (they succeeded with about three) while we waited for the doctor to come in and verify that all was good and then pay our $75 co-pay.

Now we are gratefully staple-free. After lunch both Savannah and Mommy got a very well deserved nap (while Eliza and Rachel – who also did a remarkably good job the whole time – watched Christmas cartoons and played "my baby got staples stuck in her head and we need another doctor to get it out").

The Scorpion Miracle

We went swimming for part of FHE and as the sun was going down (note - it was getting dark) the girls started getting cold and we realized it was bedtime anyway. Savannah was the first out. I washed her up and as she was shivering I made sure to dry her very thoroughly. I aimed for every inch - from her hair to her feet. I wanted her dry. Then I wrapped her up extra tight in the towel to be warm while I tended to her sisters.

Rachel came next. As I was getting her ready she started yelling, "Scorpion! Scorpion!" At Keith's and my request she very calmly showed us exactly where it was - on the back of Savannah's towel, about knee high. It took me a while to see it. At first I thought it was just a leaf or twig. I am amazed she not only saw it, but also recognized it for what it was. We now call her our "Hero Scorpion Hunter." She found the last one in our house too.

I quickly took the towel off the still shivering (and now confused) Savannah and Keith killed it while I hurried the girls inside to finish cleaning up.

I know I had my hands on every inch of that towel, and every inch of Savannah. Although possible, it is unlikely the scorpion climbed on after I dried her off because they typically do not go into open areas like where we were, nor was it moving when we saw it.

Either way, I know the Lord protected us. He kept it on the right side of the towel away from Savannah, He kept it away from my hands when I was drying her off, and He kept it away from our feet as we were walking around.

We were spared an ER trip and days-week of severe pain. The Bark Scorpion is the most venomous scorpion in the US, but with modern medical intervention no one has actually died from it in the last few decades. Of course, some people's reports of being stung sound like they wish they had died from it because it is so painful.

I know the Lord was watching over us and I know He protected us tonight. I know sometimes He lets bad things happen, but tonight I am overwhelmingly grateful for the time He didn't.

New Homeschool Year!

We are very excited to start school this year! We have a class size of up to three. I think that is a pretty good teacher to student ratio.

I've often been asked why I've decided to homeschool and to be honest my answer is constantly evolving. Honestly, I think it will be fun. I enjoy the opportunity I'll have to spend more time with my children and watch them as they learn and grow. Just like it was super fun to watch them learn to eat, walk, and talk, I will get the chance to watch them learn to read and add. I know there will be days that are more fun than others - there always will be. I guess that is why we 'learn to dance in the rain.'

Kimonos - learning about Japan from My Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say (with hopscotch on the floor)

 Musical Instrument Museum Tour:
Harmonicas - Reed, this picture is for you. Notice the one with the small horns below the TV screen in the middle. I think you should get one like that, or a triple-decker. I think you've been living below your privileges and abilities. :)
Rachel was so excited about the headset and was sitting so reverently and happily
A room full of drums (and others) - how can any kid go wrong when the only question is "What should I bang on next?"

Learning the Food Pyramid

 Family Home Evening Refreshments
The day we moved into our new home our angelic friend came over to watch the girls while Keith and I organized the chaos. Since our suitcase with our swimsuits accidentally got packed in the moving truck first we let the girls swim in their clothes.
Smiles while we were packing up.
I found a bag of chocolate chips the day we were moving and Savannah soon found them afterwards. I figured it was an easy way to occupy them and get the floor picked up to just let them go at it. Obviously they didn't mind helping me out.

Rachel zonked out after a long day.

Slide Rock and New House

Oh, my long forgotten blog. I really haven't forgotten you, I just haven't added anything to you. My life has been so crazy of things I should be adding that I really haven't had any time to add anything. I guess, like everything else in life, it is just that I haven't taken the time to add anything. So here is a mad recap of our life recently.
This past weekend we had the wonderful opportunity to go to Slide Rock up in Sedona. It was tons of fun but the water was very cold. We went once before when Eliza was over a year old but we went over Labor Day so it was much hotter outside. Keith took all of the girls down the 'slide' at least once. I think Savannah was the only one who wanted to go a second time. I went twice and will say the second time was much better than the first. The girls' favorite part I think was climbing all of the (dry) rocks after we finished swimming.
This was taken right after they went down the slide and I think Eliza fell on her way to this rock, which is really why she is screaming. I told them to give me their biggest pouts.
 Keith carrying Savannah down.
 All smiles.
Eliza with a perfectly roasted marshmallow all over her face. We had to convince her that this was fun - at first she was quite upset about it.
Here is the moving truck in front of our Maricopa house. Keith got a new job 1 1/2 hr away and the commute was just killing us. We're so glad he got this new job as it has been a wonderful experience for him to learn so much more. He started really looking for a new job in April and although he had a few interviews one company in LA really seemed interested - half of the time. They gave us an offer with a good bonus and amazing retirement. We were getting so excited about the cooler weather when this other job came up here in Goodyear. At first we didn't think much of it, but after a good offer came in and through much fasting and prayer we realized this was where the Lord wanted us. We're so glad we followed the Lord as this company/possition is much more family friendly.

Happy Mother's Day & Birthday to Me

My Mom and Reed were able to come down this past week and we've had a wonderful time. Now the house is quiet and I miss them.

Some of the highlights of this past week:
Friday night: arrival - Mom & Reed put the girls to bed with some way cool bedtime stories - we need more.

Saturday - We made the coolest ever fairy wands in the morning and then Mom & Reed spent the rest of the day with his son & family

Sunday - Mother's Day! It was so great to spend Mother's Day with my mom. This is the first time we've been together for Mother's Day since I've had children.

Savannah started gifts early by giving us a pool in our kitchen. Her highchair was next to a 2 1/2 gallon water dispencer and she figured out how to open it. According to Rachel, Savannah opened it and

Rachel closed it. Either way - it took 8 full sized towels to sop up the mess. Amazingly, we were still on time to church.

Eliza did a great job singing with the primary  - she actually sang! My mom had the coolest toys in Sacrament Meeting and we even had three+ additional kids because of it, but I was still able to listen to most of the meeting. However, I think not so cool toys might be best for church . . . I was also able to go to RS with my mom - thanks Sis. Thacker for filling in for me in Primary.

Tuesday - My Birthday! Rachel started the gift giving this day. She crawled in bed with Keith and I at 5:30am. At 6:00 am she threw up.

Needless to say we canceled all of our fun plans for that day. We stayed home and played games - which ended up being quite a bit of fun. Keith even let me win Ticket to Ride - he must REALLY love me.

Between my birthday and Mother's Day I got the coolest of all gifts. Keith gave me a new waffle iron - so excited! Mom gave me the audio to I Am A Mother, a way awesome mini essential oils kit and other es. oils accessorites, a water filter, a purse, and a copy of my Ggggreat Grandfather's History! I think I even forgot somethings. Sorry. Grandma C. even had mom bring me a way cool Make a Mix cookbook.

Wednesday - movies and laundry while they were at Rex's

Thursday - Titan Missle Museum. Way cool museum, so glad we've ended the arms race - really the world would have been blown to shreads. Of course, I would not recommend this venue for young children. The attendants must have either never had children or forgotten what it is like to be/have young children. There was only one other child on our tour (besides my 3) and he was asked to leave for barely making a sound. I didn't even hear him. Poor guys.

Friday - They left. So sad!

Keith's Last Vacation Day

We celebrated Keith's last vacation day with the most exciting game first - throwing paper towels up & down the stairs while I made breakfast. The girls were up top and Keith was at the bottom and there could have been nothing more fun than this spontanious game of 'dodge ball'... um ... 'dodge paper towels.' Then we met up with an old college friend at Freestone Park - a little kid's ammusment park - and the girls were very well entertained.

This was Savannah's first solo ride. I was concerned but the controler for the ride was very watchful and she had a blast.

She wasn't sure what to think of the carousel at first. Even with us holding on to her she was concerned. But she soon relaxed and I think it became her favorite. Whenever it stopped she'd start spurring her steed on. I had a blast just watching her.

Christmas 2011

Merry Christmas!
Here are some of our highlights :
Mary and 'Joseph' on Donkey Daddy with our Angel and King Herrod on the sofa. Thanks Nick and Renee for joining us and for playing the part! Gifts!

Enjoying the goods from the crackers (party poppers) and the new Christmas purse.

This was all I wanted when I made Savannah a blanket for Christmas!

I'm not sure if she's more excited about the gifts under the tree or the fact that she is actually walking.

Christmas was tons of fun and very low-key. After gifts we had a quick breakfast followed by church services. Then a yummy dinner with friends and acting out the Nativity - the favorite part is always the donkey ride.
